About This Tool
Grain is what separates a flat digital photo from something that feels shot on film. Modern phones smooth it away, leaving images a little lifeless. Adding it back, in the right amount, brings texture and warmth that the eye reads as analog.
This page is built around the grain slider. Upload a photo and the Film Grain preset lays down a fine base texture; from there, dial the grain until it looks right. Low values give a fine, silky texture you can barely see; higher values give a coarse, gritty look closer to pushed film or a high-ISO night shot. Because you control the amount, it never has to look fake or overdone.

How to add grain to a photo
Four steps, and the fourth is the one people miss.
1Open the picture
Drag it onto the page, paste it, or tap Upload. JPEG, PNG and WebP work everywhere. HEIC straight off an iPhone usually works when you pick it on the phone itself, but that depends on the browser rather than on this page, and HEIC is the usual culprit when a file refuses to load at all.
2Move the Grain slider
It is the first control under Basic, and on this page it opens at 35 because the Film Grain preset is already applied. That is grain as the point of the picture; if you want it present but not announced, 25 is where the 35mm Film preset sits. Watch a flat area such as a sky rather than a busy one, because that is where grain shows first and where too much of it shows worst.
3See it at full size once
The preview here is scaled to fit the window, and there is no zoom, so it is not showing you the grain at its real scale. Download once and open the file in your own viewer to check what the texture is actually doing — what reads as pleasant on a fitted preview can be visible speckle at full size, particularly in skies. This is a check for artefacts, not the moment to settle on a strength; step four is for that.
4Set the strength at the size it will be seen
This is the step that quietly undoes the other three. Grain is a per-pixel effect and any downscaling averages it away, so a strength chosen while zoomed in arrives weaker wherever the picture actually ends up. Work out how large it will be displayed, judge the amount at that size, and push the slider past what looks right on screen if you already know it is going somewhere small.
How much grain is the right amount
The slider runs 0 to 100 and almost nothing above 40 is useful. For a sense of scale, every preset on this site sits between 18 and 38, and these are the ones worth aiming at.

The mistake that costs you the grain entirely
Grain is drawn one value per pixel, at whatever resolution the editor is working at — your photo's own, or 4096 on the long edge if it was larger than that. Export at 1080 from a twelve-megapixel original and every output pixel becomes an average of several input pixels, and averaging random noise is precisely how you remove it. The grain you judged at full size arrives noticeably weaker.
Exporting at Original does not avoid this, it only hands the resizing to whoever displays the photo next, and a social platform will shrink it just as effectively. The thing that actually helps is deciding the final size first and then judging the grain at that size rather than at 100% zoom — or, if you already know the picture is going somewhere small, pushing the slider past what looks right on screen so something survives the trip.
What the even spread costs you
The noise is generated at one amplitude for the whole frame, without reference to how bright any part of it already is. What you actually see is a little more forgiving than that sounds, because values are clipped at pure black and pure white afterwards, which starts to eat the noise itself at the extremes. At exactly white only the half that would brighten is clipped, leaving grain that can darken but not lighten; on a pixel the other sliders have already pushed well past white, both halves go and the texture disappears entirely. Still, the simplification is real: film grain is most apparent through the midtones and tapers off where the emulsion is nearly clear or nearly saturated, and a flat amplitude does not reproduce that taper.
In practice it costs least on ordinary photographs and most on high-contrast ones. If your picture is mostly midtones you will not be able to tell. Where it shows is the range just short of blown or just short of black, which carries more texture than film would have put there, and the honest fix is less grain overall rather than expecting the slider to know the difference. Where grain goes next
Grain rarely finishes a photo on its own. It pairs most naturally with softness, because real grain sat on images that were never perfectly sharp, and with a little fade.
